Characters/People
With the exception of two characters, the people who accompany us on our journey through The Angels’ Footpath are drawn from contemporary Americana. They come from a diversity of cultural and economic circumstances. By temperament, they range from loving to down right nasty. We see the best and worst of humanity. There is struggle. People of faith survive.
As for the two exceptions: ... well... you’ll just have to read The Angels’ Footpath to discover who they are....

Quotations
“A good story conveys a message that strengthens our values.”
“Here was a man who desperately needed a woman’s love..... and she was determined to be that woman.”
“Sobbing quietly, he continued to stroke the kitten. He felt lost, alone, afraid, and very hurt.”
“... they’ll torture him... They will be merciless... His escape from San Jose was an embarrassment to the NSS... They hate him for what he did .... and... they hate him because he is a man of God.... The NSS doesn’t like any theology that conflicts with government policy... Especially Christianity.”
“If a theology fails to bring people together, it has no moral value.”
“When the train stopped in Oakland’s Jack London Square, several children gathered around the passengers as they left the train. Rick watched them from the train window as they begged for money. They had learned to be very insistent. They followed the passengers, hands extended, pleading as they walked, until the passengers left the platform. ....He looked intently at their faces. They were mostly dirty, sullen, and desperate.”
“... we must have a faith that rests on a foundation of credible beliefs. It is on this single point that much of current religious philosophy has failed us all. Many popular beliefs are tied to archaic perceptions of reality. If today’s knowledge is tomorrow’s ignorance, then it follows that theological values must be drawn from universal truths that cannot be challenged by evolving scientific knowledge. There is no need for religion to describe the mechanics of a physical universe. Leave them for science to discover. Instead, let us seek the knowledge that flows from God’s spiritual reality”
“Tears came to her face. Tears of joy and relief. The three words she wanted to hear. For so long.”
“The NSS wanted to know who you are, where you are, what you are doing, and what you think. People who are politically incorrect can be identified, tracked, arrested and confined for questioning.”
“Truth is reality.…. But unfortunately…. Truth is unpopular…. We humans have a long history of denying truth and since truth is reality, I suppose that means we humans frequently refuse to accept reality.”
“Suddenly Clarise emerged from the kitchen brandishing a large soup spoon dripping with vegetable stew. She charged the other officer with such ferocity she was able to knock him against the wall.”
“... when the time of death is near, a spiritual awakening enables the soul to make a seamless transition from the physical universe to the spiritual universe. The energy of the body is transformed into a spiritual manifestation of our personal being. And that is my unique message. My mission is to bring us all closer to the spiritual—and to tie the physical with the spiritual through natural experience.”
“The NSS has labeled all our personal files with a vicious do not hire code. We can not be hired for a job... Me... All of my employees. With that code in the file, no one dares hire us. The NSS won’t let us get a job.”
“The angels’ footpath is a place of love, faith, and peace. If good people look for it, they will find their way to heaven.”
“I will focus on delivering the message God has given to me. It is a message of love, responsibility, and spiritual renaissance. Jesus brought forth the message of love and responsibility two thousand years ago. God has now added the message of spiritual renaissance. I am compelled to bring this message to all who will listen.”

Themes/Symbolism
The Angels’ Footpath blends contemporary politics and theology. The political themes are easy to recognize. And frightening. The theology is drawn from my conviction that Christianity will not survive the 21st century unless it embraces the fruits of 21st century human knowledge. Those who believe the Bible is, word for word, the word of God, are troubled by the theology. On the one hand, it reflects the best values of the Christian experience. On the other hand, it is definitely unconventional. And very realistic. This is not like anything you have ever read in the Bible. Or ... is it?
The Angels’ Footpath is symbolic of how we are able to make the transition from physical life to spiritual eternity, and from the Hell we have created on this planet to the peace and beauty of the Spiritual Universe. We explore the concept of love. Life has meaning.
Although the reader will be able to identify several interrelated themes and multiple symbols in this novel, I want to emphasize that The Angels’ Footpath is, first and foremost, a good story with interesting characters and a highly credible plot. And so, my advice is: read it first for pleasure. Enjoy Angels as a work of fiction.
Then read it a second and third time to understand the themes, ponder the symbolism, and embrace the message.

Settings/Locations
Most of the action in The Angels’ Footpath occurs in Northern California: San Jose, Sacramento, the Central Valley, Humboldt County. One can find every story location, right down to the actual building.
The primary location for this novel, however, was chosen with great care. I wanted to find a little farming community that was near the intellectual influence of a college or university campus. For reasons you will understand if you read Angels, my key characters needed to grow up in a friendly small town environment. As teenagers, they also needed to achieve significant intellectual growth.
In 2008, my wife decided she would like to visit Peru with a friend. Travel arrangements were made. Her friend would drive from Redding to the San Francisco airport. We would drive down from Auburn to meet her in the little town of Winters on route 505.
Now Winters is 12 miles from the University of California at Davis. That of course met the objective of intellectual opportunity. But I didn’t know anything about Winters. Would it be the perfect farming community for the location of my story?
On a clear, cool, spring morning we met my wife’s friend near Winters. After saying goodbye (with hugs all around), they left for San Francisco. I set out to explore the town. I walked the streets. Talked to the people in the shops. Drove through several neighborhoods. Found the High School. Had lunch at a local cafe. Located the places where my primary characters would live. And even identified the sites for several love scenes.
Winters was perfect.

From The Author
In 2005, I journeyed up the coast of Maine to visit with my brother in Owls Head. As has been our custom for many years, he pulled out a selection of his oil paintings to show me the fruits of his labor. Dwight’s work often projects a spiritual quality, and the image of a path is a recurrent theme. The mystical essence of the painting that graces the cover of my novel is certainly no exception. It leads the eye through a forest to a portal bathed in light, suggesting there is a path to heaven. It has been impossible to get that poignant concept out of my mind, and it eventually became the basis for the compassionate theology that emerges in this novel.
Work on this book started when I retired in 2002. In the course of looking for a plot line, I stumbled upon oil depletion and took a literary detour to write two books on oil, economics, culture and political systems. But some power kept nudging me to get back to work on this project. Ever so gently it encouraged me to get started. In 2008, unable to resist any longer, I immersed myself in a quest for spiritual enlightenment. My discoveries led to the creation of a story of love, conflict, and faith. From the beginning, I was determined the plot would be realistic, the characters interesting, and the theology credible.
I’m not entirely sure where this story originated. Was it from somewhere deep in my subconscious? Or somewhere else? I really don’t know. In any event, it just seemed to flow with a sense of joy as I wrote each paragraph.
Writing this novel has been a rewarding experience. It has strengthened my faith.

When the author asked me if I thought it was a book that I would like to read, I checked out his page and agreed. I am glad I did as it is a very interesting book from the beginning to the last page which is appropriately ended with the words "The Beginning" I feel like this book will be enjoyed by many.

The Angels’ Footpath - Excerpt from Chapter 1
Hours passed. To relieve the tension, Josue walked across the farmyard to the barn. Then he returned to the farmhouse. Back and forth. Maybe 30 times. Tracing a path through the mud and wet grass. The silence of the damp night air was broken only by the bleating of a lamb and the distant sound of highway traffic –all muted by the shroud of fog rising slowly from the creek.
Josue was a big man. Taller than most. Proud of his independence and his skills. Josue worked as a farm machinery mechanic in Winters. People said he could fix anything. There was a sense of satisfaction in that. Being really good at something. He and Mari worked their little farm in their spare time. They had three cows, some chickens, a pig for slaughter and – in the spring – rows of carefully tended vegetables.
Josue and Mari had tried many times to have a baby. They had prayed to the heavenly father for a child. And now this agonizing delay seemed to last forever. Just before midnight, the night sky began to clear, revealing the twinkling lights of a thousand stars. A gentle breeze brought the chill of cooler air . Josue shifted uneasily from one foot to the other. Then – finally - the sound he was waiting for filled the house. The lusty cry of a new-born baby. Followed by much commotion as the mid-wife went about her chores. Suddenly, a very large woman appeared in the hallway behind him.
“Congratulations, Josue,” she smiled. “You are a father. You have a beautiful son.” She carefully handed a bundle of blankets to him. Josue tenderly cradled the baby in his arms and unfolded the blanket just enough to see a very small pink face.
“My son, our life.”
Tears filled his eyes as he looked upward at the stars. “Thank you, Heavenly Father. Thank you for granting our wish.”
***
In a nearby field a man reaches down into the damp grass to pick up a very small lamb. He hears the cry of a new born baby. It has happened. Josue and Marie have gotten their most cherished wish. Cuddling the lamb in his arms, an almost imperceptible smile traces its way across the man’s weathered face. His eyes become moist with a private joy. Gently he strokes the lamb.
“It is done,” he whispers.
